Put Your Best Foot Forward

Function vs. Fashion A Buyers Guide To Selecting The Optimal Sneaker

During a recent gym session, I couldn't help but notice a fellow member of our club doing his routine. As a seemingly older gentleman, I was undeniably impressed with his strength, mobility, balance and the spirit of determination in his eyes. As I silently cheered him on, the personal trainer and holistic health coach in me couldn't help but notice one tiny adjustment that would make a tremendous difference in this man's capacity to perform with more ease and prevent impending injuries.

That small change: different sneakers.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I am NOT a pediatrist, but I have seen first hand the difference the right shoe can make. When it comes to sneakers, I believe that functionality should come before fashion. However, in a world where we can have it all- here are five tips for selecting the best shoe for you.

FLEXIBILITY

If you're moving, your shoe should move, too. While there is an exception for every rule, as a standard, your shoe should have both structure and the ability to bend. A flexible sneaker allows the muscles in the feet to move naturally which will improve posture, balance, mobility and performance.

TYPE

When I say type, I don't intend on igniting a debate on ethics and sustainability of brands like Nike or New Balance. While all of that could and should influence your decision making, from a functionality perspective, I would encourage you to select a sneaker based on the type of training you do. For every sport and every imaginable activity, there is a specific type of shoe designed to accommodate your traction, stability, speed and more- all depending on the what kind of exercise you do.

SHOP

Instead of buying the "Top-Rated" sneaker online, or quickly grabbing the run-of-the-mill shoe at a department store, I highly encourage you to visit a local sneaker retailer. They will have a wide selection of brands and styles and will be able to offer informed recommendations for a shoe that is made for the type of training you do. As an added and crucial benefit, they will also accuratley measure your feet to ensure the perfect fit. I have always had an exceptional experience at Miles Ahead located in Sea Girt, New Jersey and Road Runner Sports in Shrewsberry, New Jersey.

FIT

When it comes to selecting the perfect sneaker, it's all about finding the right fit. I encourage my clients to channel their inner “Goldie Locks” and find the one "that's just right." From toe box to heel, click here for a comprehensive guide that will give you an idea of what to look and feel for when purchasing your next sneaker.

STYLE

Select a sneaker you actually like and will look forward to wearing. It sounds superficial, but there is scientific evidence that supports this notion. Known as "unclothed cognition," this psychological phenomenon suggests that wearing clothes (and sneakers) you like, can boost your confidence and motivation, thus, improving your performance.

BUY THE DAMN SNEAKERS

Like the timeless adage suggests, no matter the color or pattern, select the sneakers you love and "buy the damn shoes!" I hope this blog inspires you to recognize that an investment in your sneakers is a worthy investment in your wellness. As you gear up to make your next sneaker purchase, put your best foot forward and make a smart purchase that reinvigorates your motivation around taking steps to get your fitness back on track!
